The June Mountain Ski Patrol

Who are we?

June Mountain Ski Patrol is a Team of approximately 45 paid and unpaid volunteers, dedicated to the core, committed to professionalism and a love for the mountains and serving others. We are trained in OEC - Outdoor Emergency Care, Professional CPR and Winter Rescue Skill Sets. We are part of a larger international organization, the National Ski Patrol System (NSPS), which includes almost 30,000 patrollers. We serve the guests of June Mountain Resort in June Lake.

When do we work?

During the week patrol coverage is provided by the June Mountain Paid Patrol staff, who are paid June Mountain employees. The June Mountain Volunteer Patrol staff augments the Paid Patrol staff throughout the week, with their primary assignment / responsibility on the weekends.  The members of the Volunteer Patrol staff are required to patrol 10 days (5 weekends) + 1 Holiday each season to remain active. The Volunteer Patrol staff receives no financial compensation ... they do receive discounts on services and meals while on duty and are eligible for many other patroller benefits.

What first aid background do we have?

All members of the June Mountain Ski Patrol are required to hold a current OEC - Outdoor Emergency Care and Professional CPR Certification. Some members are paramedics, fire fighters, registered nurses, and emergency medical technicians. In addition, all members receive extensive training in winter rescue, skiing and toboggan handling techniques during their initial training period. Training is continually refreshed and updated during the season and throughout a patroller's career.

What do we do?

Our job is to create a safe environment and enable our guests to enjoy a fun and pleasurable mountain experience. Our primary function is to provide basic life support, winter rescue and on-slope transportation for the guests of June Mountain. Additionally, patrollers frequently assist in public relations, area operations, skier safety programs, and other actions to ensure the general safety of the skiing/snowboarding public at June Mountain. Besides finding us on the Mountain, you may see some of our members giving presentations at local ski shows, ski clubs or ski swap meets. You can identify us by the red jackets with the white cross on the back. We are the first ones on the mountain in the morning and the last to leave, regardless of the weather or snow conditions.

What type of background / qualifications are required?

To be a member of June Mountain Ski Patrol, applicants should be "advanced level" skiers or snowboarders and be able to competently ski/ride all terrain, in all conditions at June Mountain. We look for potential candidates who have strong communication skills, in good physical condition and most importantly ... have a great attitude! You can expect to put in a full day's work, but the rewards and satisfaction are outstanding!

June Mountain Ski Patrol members are classified as ...

CANDIDATE ... new applicants in training - a first year patroller.

BASIC PATROLLER ... 18 years or older and has passed all basic training & testing requirements.

SENIOR / CERTIFIED PATROLLER ...18 years or older and has passed advanced training and testing requirements.

May June Mountain Ski Patrol members patrol at other areas?

National Ski Patrol members, once assigned to a mountain resort such as June Mountain, can only patrol at that Mountain. Some selected personnel including Seniors and Certified Patrollers are permitted to visit and patrol at other areas with the permission of that areas Patrol Director. Certain ski areas are not affiliated with the NSP and therefore do not allow NSP affiliated Patrollers to visit or work in a patrol capacity on their Mountain.

Does the patrol at June Mountain charge people for first aid rendered?

All first aid rendered at June Mountain as in most resorts in the USA, is done so at no charge to the injured. June Mountain Ski Patrol relies strongly on donations along with outside support, including our annual Fund-Raiser / Spring Banquet. The generosity and support provides advanced training and educational opportunities for our members. June Mountain Ski Patrol and the National Ski Patrol are both non-profit organizations ... thanks you for your support.

Are there any costs associated with joining June Mountain Ski Patrol?

All June Mountain Ski Patrollers pay annual NSP dues, provide all of their own ski / snowboard equipment, food & lodging expenses, patrol jackets and first aid packs.

What if I want to join or have more questions?
