Welcome to June Mountain Ski Patrol

What is a host?

Hosts are the on-the-hill ambassadors for the mountain. Your job is to ensure guests feel welcome on the mountain.

A host is a member of the Ski Patrol and does learn VERY basic first aid. But the main responsibilities include:

  • Greeting Guests in the morning
  • Thanking Guests in the evening
  • Providing Maps to Guests
  • Asking Guests to fill out a brief survey during lunchtime or at the mid-chalet bar
  • Taking pictures for people
  • Skiing / Snowboarding around and being visible.

Does that mean I never get to ski?

Usually, you get to ski most of the day. In fact, it is your job. :-)

But, you're a member of ski patrol? Does that mean I have to ski really well?
No, in fact you don't have to ski / snowboard at all if you don't want or haven't learned yet...(though the chalet does get a bit boring in the morning). As far as first aid is concerned, if you see anybody in danger or who has hurt themselves, alert a certified patroller to aid the person. Just ask if they're ok if they're lying on their back.

What do I get out of this?

For the days you host, you can ski / snowboard all day that day.
You get 50% off food in the main Chalet, a 10% discount (i think) on
merchandise, a discount on rentals, and a voucher to be used at
either June or Mammoth. That's right. In addition to getting to
ski all day at June, you get another free day of skiing at Mammoth
with your voucher, or you can share it with your friends (don't sell
them!)

In addition, you get a built in community of ski patrollers and
other hosts to spend time with. No need to say, "I don't ski
because I don't have anyone to ski with".

Why June?

June is a slightly smaller, but very accessible mountain just a
little bit further north of Mammoth. It almost always has fresh
powder long after Mammoth has been skied out, and offers short lift
lines throughout the day. The terrain on the mountain offers
challenges for any level of skier.

How far is June?

About 5 hours or so. I drive up on a Friday night, and it can take
a bit longer to navigate the traffic. Sunday nights I have no
problem. You take the 405 to the 5 to the 14 to the 395.

Where do I stay?

Ski patrol does have housing. It is located past June Lake in Lee
Vining. It is not extravagant, but it is affordable and has a
kitchen. You bring a sleeping bag and sleep on a bunk bed,
assortment of beds, the living room pull out sofa, or the floor. As
I said, functional.. . Or you can stay at a variety of accommodations
directly in June (~ 60+ per night).

What do I have to do?

In order to be a host, you have to commit to one weekend per month
(January - April this year), and ideally one additional weekend. If
you are unsure, try it for one weekend.

On the weekend you are hosting, you are expected to be on the hill
at approximately 7:30 on Saturday and approximately 8am on Sunday.
You will be done at around 4:30 - 5pm. Afterwards, members of
patrol usually grab food / drink at one of the local restaurants.
